Pejuang kemerdekaan yang mengobarkan semangat jihad, perlawa nan terhadap kezaliman, membekali dirinya dengan pemahaman dan pengetahuan agama yang dalam, sebelum terjun dalam dunia militer untuk seterusnya aktif dalam aksi-aksi perlawanan dalam mempertahankan kemerdekaan negeri. Mengawali karir militernya sebagai seorang dai muda yang giat berdakwah di era 1936-1942 di daerah Cilacap dan Banyumas. Hingga pada masa itu Soedirman adalah dai masyhur yang dicintai masyarakat.
